A Homeowner's Guide to

Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden

For South African Gardens

It’s time to turn your outdoor area into the garden of your dreams.

You’ve got plenty of ideas from the gardening magazines you’ve bought, but when it comes to actually applying these ideas in your garden, you don't know where to start.

You’d love to hire a landscape architect, but these professional services are outside of your budget. And besides, for the most part, you enjoy gardening.

What if there was a way that you could get the expertise of a professional landscape designer at an affordable price?

The good news is that there is a way! And it’s packaged up in the e-book, A Homeowner’s Guide to Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You want to upgrade your garden, but it feels like an enormous and impossible job.

  • Every season you visit the nursery and buy a trolley-load of plants, but they either end up dying or not looking quite as impactful as you’d imagined.

  • With all the beautiful plants and trees available in South Africa, you feel confused about what to choose.

  • You’re concerned about how much your garden is costing in terms of water, maintenance and purchasing of plants.

  • You’d love to upgrade your garden, but it feels like an unnecessary or extravagant expense.

What if your dream garden was within reach?

What if you could design your own garden — without having to read lengthy or complicated gardening books or swot up on every plant species imaginable? What if the process was simple and even fun?

What if you could get the expertise of a professional landscape designer, at a fraction of the cost of their typical custom design service packages?

What if you could walk into the nursery, knowing exactly which plants to choose and knowing that they’ll absolutely work in your garden?

What if creating the garden of your dreams wasn’t a huge intimidating project, but instead you had a clear masterplan that you could implement gradually, seeing beautiful results at every step?

What if a garden upgrade was affordable and ended up helping you to save money on water, maintenance and purchasing plants?

What if your garden was a place full of life? Plant life, animal life, and the lives of you and your loved ones as you create happy memories...

A Homeowner’s Guide to Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden (for South African Gardens) is an e-book that’ll take you step-by-step through the exact process that I use when designing custom gardens for clients.

I focus on the key items that typically need addressing in residential gardens and equip you with the skills you need to put together a masterplan for your garden. Along the way, you’ll learn the design principles that I use every day in my work as a Landscape Architect and I’ll guide you to apply these principles to suit your particular outdoor areas and your family’s needs.

The e-book is written specifically with the residential gardener in mind, so I’ve kept things practical and addressed cost-saving aspects like waterwise gardening. I also share my best tips for attracting wildlife and butterflies to your garden, making it a place of life and beauty.

The e-book is a digital product and will be delivered to you in PDF format immediately after payment. You can download and read the PDF on your computer, or send it to your tablet to read on the go. If you’d like, you could also send the PDF to your local print shop and treat yourself to a printed and bound copy! Once you purchase the e-book, you’ll get all future updates and additions to this product — for free!

"I’ve always dreamed of having an indigenous grasslands garden and when I moved to a new home, I had the perfect space to create my ideas. Gina and I worked together to design what has turned out to be a beautiful natural sanctuary filled with endemic plants and wildlife."

Sue Donald, Residential Homeowner

Imagine sitting on a patio chair as the sun sets and you sip on your favourite beverage.
You gaze out at your garden, grateful that this beautiful patch of the Earth is your sanctuary.
(And, let’s be honest, you’re feeling very pleased with yourself, knowing that YOU designed it).

Hi, I'm Gina!

I’m a registered Professional Landscape Architect with SACLAP and I’ve been working in the industry for over 13 years. In 2015, I started my own landscape design business, Sprout Landscapes, where I’ve had the pleasure of designing gardens for universities, business parks and residential homes.

I am also a homeowner with a garden of my own! In 2018, we moved from a townhouse complex to a freestanding home in Greenside, Johannesburg. The garden had great potential, but was in need of some TLC and a few bold design decisions that would better suit my family.

When we moved in, I made a masterplan for my own garden and we’ve been systematically implementing that plan ever since. We’ve also chosen to remove a few of the existing exotic trees (I really had to convince my husband to go ahead with that one!).

So, the design principles you’ll learn in my e-book, A Homeowner’s Guide to Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden (for South African Gardens), are not only based on my expertise as a landscape architect, but also on my experience as a homeowner and a mom of two girls who love to be outdoors!

You know your family’s needs the best, so it’s my aim to equip you with the landscaping knowledge you need to design a garden that’s perfect for you and your family.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden (for South African Gardens) is specifically designed with the South African residential homeowner in mind. While I teach a lot of design principles and give guidance around specific types of plants, I also ask a lot of questions — questions that only you can answer!

Once you have the answers to these questions, you’ll be able to make confident design decisions. As such, this e-book is not only an informational read, but it’s also a workbook that equips you to take action.

So you could head down to your local bookstore and purchase a general book on gardening, but you wouldn’t be getting the actionable guidance that you’ll be getting in Designing Your Own Indigenous Garden.

In the post-pandemic new normal, many of us are spending more time at home and in our gardens. Isn’t it time to add a bit of beauty and delight to your outdoor spaces, especially when the rest of the world feels rather stressful and overwhelming?

You could go it alone and seek out information online and in gardening magazines, but you’ll probably find that you’re spending all your time researching and very little time out in the garden. Instead, with this e-book, you can save time and get the support of your own gardening guide (that’s me!).

The e-book is available for a special launch price of R295. I plan to make additions and updates to the e-book periodically and as I do so, the price will increase. However, if you purchase the e-book now, you’ll get access to all future updates for FREE. So not only is this the lowest price that you’ll be able to get the e-book, it’ll also be a gift that keeps on giving!

"We bought a home with an established garden which we appreciated at first but realised over time that it didn't suit our family. We entertain often and love garden parties; we also have 4 sporty children who need plenty of grassy area for soccer and cricket games. Gina's design helped us see the potential to create more space and use existing rockery and shrubbery to reimagine sections of the garden. Gina listened to our ideas, helped us prioritize our desires and managed to keep budget in mind at all times. The change to our garden has been SO rewarding and we have taken endless pleasure from our new open space and the beautiful succulent garden we have cultivated over time."

Lauren and Matt Gray, Residential Homeowners

Still have questions...?

I do not have green fingers! Will I be able to design a garden?

YES! The process of garden design is a different art to gardening itself. I've also found that a well-designed garden sets you up for gardening success. From there, you can get the assistance of a garden helper, a garden service, or your family members to help plant and maintain your newly-designed garden. But I'm confident that you'll find the joy in gardening in no time!

How do I claim the bonus 30-minute consultation session?

If you're one of the first 20 people to purchase before 31 March 2022, then you're eligible for the bonus 30-minute consultation session, which will be held over Zoom. Immediately after purchasing, you'll get an email with details on how to book your session. You have until 31 July 2022 to book your session. When you book, you must send me your hand drawn garden design so that I can review it before our call. I’ll then send you a Zoom link for the call.

How long will it take to produce my garden design?

This will depend on a few things, such as the size of the area you’re upgrading, how many variations you decide to try, and how fast you typically work ;). At a minimum, I'd estimate you’d need 1-2 hours for a site analysis and then another 2-3 hours to do one basic design.

How long will it take to implement my garden design?

This is entirely up to you. Many people decide to implement section by section and they may even take several years to implement their entire masterplan. However, if you’re looking for a quick win, you might choose to upgrade a specific section of garden and get it done within a day. Purchase or order your plants ahead of time, then book out a block of time to compost, dig and plant. Many of my clients have turned this into a fun family activity.

Do I need to use any special tools or software to design my garden?

No design software is required. Your main tools will be a pencil and paper. Add some coloured pencils for creative flair. I also recommend drawing out your existing baseplan first, and then making several copies so that you can experiment with different variations. We’ll also use Google Maps to get an aerial view of your property.

Will the e-book be a comprehensive gardening guide?

The e-book focuses on residential indigenous garden design, so it is not intended to give you the A-Z of everything gardening. I’ve intentionally kept it specific so that you can get you maximum results in as short a time as possible, without the overwhelm. You'll learn design principles that you can strategically apply in your specific garden. I also give examples of plant species that work well for particular plant palettes, and while my suggestions are extensive, they're not exhaustive.
My focus on indigenous gardening also limits the scope of the e-book, as I believe that an indigenous garden style is really the simplest to maintain, as well as being beautiful.
I have included a list of additional references, if you are interested in diving deeper or would like additional suggestions for plant species.

Gina, I've decided I don't want to design my own garden, but I'd like you to do it for me. What's the next step?

I’d be delighted! I work in the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas. The first step would be a site visit (R500/hour plus travel). If you’d like to go ahead with a custom garden design, my packages start from R5000. Please contact me at gina@sproutlandscapes.co.za to book a site visit.
